To emphasize effective teaching strategies, the School District commits tax payer dollars to researched based curriculum. We are utilizing more digital curriculum for areas such as business, AgEd, and technology courses. Currently our FACS and Arts classes are the most hands on/project based learning for our students.

Congratulations to Devin Dubois on receiving a NDFFA Foundation Grant for his SAE Project in Beef Cattle Production.

You know you purchased a great reading curriculum when you have personalized training from the author, Dr. Sharon Walpole, one day and the next day she goes into each classroom to observe, takes notes, and gives corrective criticism to help teachers teach it better. She also met with the Reading Team Strategists to help strengthen their work in differentiated instruction. Thank you ND Department of Public Instruction for the NDSLI grant to make this possible. #BurroPride

Effective teaching in the Hillsboro School District requires time for reflection and feedback for our students. Our strategic plan priorities & HRS levels 3 & 4 include guaranteed & viable curriculum and standards-referenced reporting. Examples of this are proficiency scales, grades, immediate feedback on projects, rough drafts with recommendations and edits, peer evaluation, and group reflection. #BurroPride

Hillsboro Elementary teachers are getting some great Bookworms reading curriculum 📚🐛 training from the author today, Dr. Sharon Walpole. 👏👏

An area of priority for Hillsboro Schools is effective teaching which consists of engaging and motivating our learners. In order to do this, we strive to continue building positive relationships among students and staff and getting to know them outside of school. Our staff does this by attending the student's school and community events they are involved in. We are also working on making homework relevant, and incorporating additional targeted interventions for students. You will find that our teachers are no longer “the rage on the stage”, but are engaging students by being the “guide on the side”. We expect our teacher to immerse our students in an environment that fosters lifelong skills, including creativity, curiosity, risk taking, collaboration, and design thinking.

Hillsboro Elementary is HIRING!

HPS continues to work on Common Vocabulary in our K-12 classrooms for HRS Level 2. It is important for teachers to create a comprehensive vocabulary program that includes basic vocabulary, advanced terms, cognitive verbs, guaranteed academic words, and words that support the academic terms.

Our HPS CURRENT STRATEGIC PRIORITY #2 is Effective Teaching in Every Classroom. With HRS Level 2 this relates to developing and maintaining effective instruction in every classroom. This includes learning goals posted in classrooms, pacing guides, “chunking” instruction of the lesson, defining common vocabulary. In grades K-12 we use a variety of assessment formats like written exams, oral presentations, project-based learning, and classroom labs. This allows students with different learning styles and strengths to highlight their abilities.

Please make sure your children have gloves or mittens and a hat to wear at recess. We have some in the lost and found. Winter has arrived and by the end of next week it will be cold at recess. Thanks for thinking about this now.

At the Hillsboro School data is used to identify priorities and goals. Our main device to understand if the district is showing growth is by analyzing the stakeholder surveys, PLC meeting notes, and HRS committee meeting minutes. Breaking down the data, we were able to identify our leading and lagging indicators in level 1. A safer and more secure environment fosters a sense of well-being among student and staff, which is more conducive to optimal learning. To address our priorities, we continue to monitor areas by having Homeland Security inspections and facility assessment evaluations completed. Annually, we review and update our school district policies, handbooks, crisis intervention plans, mentor guidelines, and annual report.

Hillsboro students are very involved: Our district provides a variety of athletic, academic, arts, technology related opportunities for our students. We host the traditional prom and homecoming events, along with National Honor Society, Science Olympiad, and Academic teams. Last year we had over 140 students involved in school sponsored organizations, such as: Yearbook, FBLA, FFA, FCCLA, Art Club, Honor Society, Science Olympiad, and Student Council. In athletics and co-curricular groups we had over 245 students in grades 9-12 and 100 K-6 students participate. We have also started allowing groups 'experiential/Immersive learning' for students through travel opportunities (Ex. Close up to Washington, DC, summer history trip planned, and Art trip to Europe). #BurroPride
